English National Opera Orchestra and Chorus perform Carl Orff’s bone-chilling ‘O Fortuna’ under the baton of conductor Paul Daniel at Classic FM Live in 2023.
‘O Fortuna’ is part of Orff’s cantata, ‘Carmina Burana’, which is based on a collection of 24 medieval Latin poems. The title means ‘Oh Fate’, and it is a lament about the inescapable power of fate, a force that rules both gods and mortals in Roman and Greek mythology. You might recognise it from its use in films such as ‘Excalibur’, ‘Natural Born Killers’, and ‘Jackass’, and in Saturday night show ‘The X Factor’, where it was used to heighten tension during its biggest moments.
