I have relatives whose only contact for decades has been asking if I forgive them yet every few years. In all that time it has never occurred to them to even fake an apology. I think I've said I'm sorry to my kids more times this week than I heard from parents and grandparents combined in my life. As for me, I understand that society was not equipped to deal with children like me back then.
